Round Pegs in Square Holes
Size 55" x 70"
In the summer of 1994, I took a trip to Europe and wanted to take along some handwork to keep me busy while riding on trains and waiting for the endless things one waits for on vacation. I cut some circles from my hand-dyed fabric collection and appliqued them to hand-dyed squares. This applique process was fairly simple and I did not have to think very much to do this. When I returned home I placed them on the wall just to see how they looked as a group and loved the effect of all of them placed side by side. I did not want to lose the 1/4" seams so I decided to stitch them all on top of the batting and backing that were sandwiched together. While stitching the blocks down, I also decided to do elaborate quilting in the borders and to leave the wonderful multi-colored threads dangling from the surface. This quilt gave me great joy and wonderful memories of my trip.
This piece was constructed by machine of all cotton fabrics, all hand-dyed by myself. This quilt was then machine quilted with rayon variegated threads.
